Sarracenia 'Juthatip Soper' – Trumpet Pitcher Plant
Sarracenia 'Juthatip Soper' is a striking carnivorous pitcher plant known for its tall, elegant traps and intricate red veining. Each pitcher acts as a natural insect trap, luring small prey with nectar before guiding it down into the tube where the plant absorbs valuable nutrients.
This cultivar is especially attractive for its strong contrast between fresh green growth and richly coloured veining around the hood. Given plenty of direct sunlight, the pitchers become more intensely coloured and develop into an impressive upright display.
Why You’ll Love It
- Dramatic pitchers: Tall, tubular traps create a sculptural and unusual appearance.
- Beautiful colour: Strong sunlight brings out the deep red veining and colour around the pitcher hoods.
- Natural insect catcher: The pitchers are specially adapted to lure and digest small insects.
- Seasonal growth: New pitchers emerge through the growing season, creating an ever-changing display.
Care at a Glance
- Light: Provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. A sunny outdoor position is ideal during the growing season.
- Water: Use only rainwater, distilled water or reverse-osmosis water. Keep the substrate permanently moist, ideally by standing the pot in a shallow tray of water.
- Substrate: Grow in a nutrient-poor carnivorous plant mix. Standard houseplant soil and fertilised compost are unsuitable.
- Feeding: No fertiliser is required. The plant will catch its own insects when available.
- Humidity: Average humidity is usually sufficient when the roots stay consistently wet and airflow is good.
- Winter: Allow a cool winter dormancy. Growth will slow and older pitchers may naturally brown and die back before fresh growth returns in spring.
Good to Know
Sarracenia are temperate bog plants rather than conventional tropical houseplants. They perform best with abundant sunlight, mineral-free water and a distinct seasonal cycle.
Do not add fertiliser or food directly into the pitchers. The plant is highly adapted to nutrient-poor conditions and can be damaged by excess minerals.
As a living plant, the exact height, colour, number of pitchers and intensity of veining will naturally vary throughout the season.
