Strelitzia Reginae (Bird of Paradise) XL
Architectural paddle leaves and bold tropical form
Strelitzia Reginae (Bird of Paradise) XL brings large, paddle-shaped, leathery leaves that rise from long stalks to form a clean, upright fan. The foliage is glossy with a pronounced midrib and mature leaves commonly show natural splitting or tearing along the margins, creating a sculptural, slightly rugged silhouette. In very bright, mature specimens the classic orange-and-blue flowers can appear, though foliage is the main feature for most indoor plants.
New growth emerges narrower and more erect, gradually widening over months or years into the broader mature paddles; leaf tearing becomes more obvious with age and handling. This plant grows in clumping fans from a short rhizome rather than climbing or trailing, and mature clumps can be divided for propagation. Flowering indoors usually requires a large, well-lit clump and sustained bright light.
As a household plant it behaves as an upright, architectural specimen that benefits from strong light; in bright conditions it produces steady new leaves. Be aware of a realistic trade-off: it needs higher light to thrive and will show yellowing with poor drainage or brown edges in dry indoor air. It is also considered toxic if ingested, so keep it away from curious pets and children.
Best suited to bright living rooms, sun-filled halls and conservatories where its fan shape can be seen. Supplied as a single large nursery size, it arrives with immediate presence rather than as a tiny starter. Compared with Strelitzia nicolai it is smaller and clumping rather than tree-like, and unlike S. juncea its leaves are broad paddles rather than narrow, reed-like blades.
