Goeppertia (Calathea) Makoyana Large
Living Art for Your Home: The Peacock Plant That Turns Heads
Goeppertia (Calathea) Makoyana Large | Fast EU shipping | Grown with love in the EU | Pet-safe
Summary: With its intricate feather-like patterns and elegant 65 cm height, the Goeppertia Makoyana—often called the Peacock Plant—brings refined tropical beauty into European homes. A statement indoor plant for German apartments that crave bold foliage without the fuss.
✨ Why You'll Love the Goeppertia Makoyana
- 🦚 Striking peacock-patterned leaves with deep green edges and purple undersides
- 🌿 Large, lush presence – approx. 65 cm tall in P17 pot
- 🌙 Leaves gently move with the light (nyctinasty), folding up at night
- 🐾 Non-toxic and pet-safe – ideal for homes with cats and dogs
- 🏡 Perfect for bright bathrooms, bedrooms, and stylish living rooms
- 🌬️ Excellent choice for indoor plants in German apartments with moderate humidity
🌞 Light & Placement
Goeppertia Makoyana thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can fade its intricate leaf patterns. A north- or east-facing window in European homes is ideal. It also adapts well to slightly lower light conditions, though growth may slow.
Keep away from cold drafts—especially during autumn and winter in Germany.
💧 Water & Humidity
Consistency is key. Keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged.
- 💦 Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry
- 🚰 Use filtered or rainwater if possible—Calatheas are sensitive to hard tap water (common in many German regions)
- 🌫️ Prefers higher humidity (50–70%)
- ❄️ Reduce watering slightly in winter
Tip: A humidifier or grouping plants together works beautifully in centrally heated European homes.
🪴 Soil & Potting
Use a well-draining yet moisture-retentive soil mix—such as a blend of houseplant soil with coco coir and perlite.
- 🪴 Pot with drainage holes is essential
- 🔁 Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh soil
🐾 Toxicity & Safety
Good news for pet lovers: Goeppertia (Calathea) Makoyana is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safe and stylish choice for animal-friendly households across the EU.
🌱 Growth & Propagation
This tropical foliage plant grows upright in a clumping habit, reaching up to 70–80 cm indoors under optimal conditions.
- 🌱 Propagate by division during repotting in spring
- 🌡️ Ideal temperature: 18–26°C
- 📈 Moderate growth rate in European indoor environments
📆 Seasonal & Special Care
During spring and summer, feed monthly with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer. In winter, growth slows significantly due to shorter daylight hours in Northern Europe—pause fertilizing and slightly reduce watering.
Brown leaf edges often indicate low humidity rather than nutrient issues.
🐛 Common Issues
- 🍂 Brown edges: Low humidity or hard water
- 🍃 Drooping leaves: Underwatering
- 🕷️ Spider mites in dry indoor air
🧬 Botanical Background
Goeppertia Makoyana (formerly classified as Calathea Makoyana) belongs to the Marantaceae family and originates from the tropical forests of Brazil. Its reclassification to Goeppertia reflects modern botanical taxonomy, though it is still widely known as a Calathea in the houseplant world.
In nature, it grows beneath rainforest canopies—explaining its love for filtered light and humid conditions, which can be easily recreated in European homes.
