Large, elongated heart‑shaped leaves are the first thing you’ll notice: a soft velour surface, very dark green–almost black blades, and striking pale to golden midribs and lateral veins that catch light. New leaves often emerge with a coppery or bronzy sheen before darkening, and the overall silhouette is a climbing stem bearing successive oversized leaves rather than a bushy mound.

This is a scandent, climbing plant that develops as it gains vertical support. Juvenile foliage is smaller and more bronzy; once trained on a moss pole or similar support the internodes shorten and the leaves lengthen and darken, producing the larger, more dramatic blades collectors prize. Expect visible aerial roots and a clear change in leaf character as the plant matures upwards.

It’s recognised by collectors for its dramatic velvet foliage and, while widely grown by specialists, it can be intermittently available and sometimes sold at a premium—so availability can be a practical trade‑off.
