Sansevieria (Dracaena) 'Fernwood Punk'

Sansevieria (Dracaena) ‘Fernwood Punk’ brings a little rebellion to the classic snake plant. Its slender, cylindrical leaves emerge in a dense, unruly cluster, twisting outward at different angles to create the spiky, sculptural silhouette behind its fitting “Punk” name. Dark green foliage is patterned with subtle silvery-green horizontal bands, giving the plant plenty of texture without losing its clean, architectural feel.

Now botanically classified within the genus Dracaena, this plant is still widely known and sold as a Sansevieria. Like its snake plant relatives, ‘Fernwood Punk’ is exceptionally forgiving. It tolerates lower light, dry indoor air and the occasional forgotten watering, making it an excellent choice for beginners, offices or anyone looking for a strong statement plant without demanding care.

Plant Care

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but adapts well to medium and lower-light positions. Brighter conditions generally encourage stronger, more compact growth.

Water: Allow the soil to dry almost completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, let excess water drain away and reduce watering significantly during the darker winter months. Overwatering is the main thing to avoid.

Humidity: Average household humidity is perfect. No additional humidity is required.

Temperature: Happiest in normal indoor temperatures of around 15–25°C. Protect from prolonged cold and temperatures below approximately 10°C.

Soil: Use a loose, fast-draining houseplant or succulent mix. Good drainage is particularly important for preventing root and rhizome rot.

Fertiliser: Feed lightly around once a month during spring and summer. Little to no fertiliser is needed in winter.

Good to Know

‘Fernwood Punk’ is a slow-growing, rhizomatous plant and may gradually produce new shoots around the base, developing into a fuller cluster over time. Its drought tolerance means it will generally cope much better with being kept slightly too dry than slightly too wet.

Pet safety: Dracaena and Sansevieria plants are considered toxic if ingested, so keep them away from pets and small children who may chew the foliage.
