Goeppertia (Calathea) roseopicta 'Surprise Star' aka 'Princess Jessie' Small
A jewel-toned beauty with royal charm
Goeppertia (Calathea) roseopicta 'Surprise Star' / 'Princess Jessie' | Fast EU shipping | Grown with love in the EU | Pet-safe
Summary: With its rich green leaves edged in pink and undersides glowing purple, the ‘Surprise Star’ (also known as ‘Princess Jessie’) is a compact showstopper. Perfect for adding tropical elegance to shelves, desks, or windowsills in European homes.
✨ Why You'll Love the Goeppertia 'Surprise Star'
- Striking pink margins and deep purple leaf backs for dramatic contrast
- Compact size: approx. 20 cm tall in a 7 cm nursery pot—ideal for small spaces
- Pet-safe—worry-free greenery for households with cats or dogs
- Thrives indoors across Germany and the EU with proper light and humidity
🌞 Light & Placement
Best placed in bright, indirect light. A north- or east-facing windowsill in German apartments is perfect. Avoid direct sun, which can bleach the delicate pink variegation.
💧 Water & Humidity
Keep the soil evenly moist—water when the top layer feels slightly dry. Always use soft, filtered, or rainwater to prevent leaf spotting. High humidity is essential: mist frequently, group with other plants, or use a humidifier during dry winters in Europe.
🪴 Soil & Potting
Use a loose, well-draining mix rich in organic matter. A peat-free substrate with perlite and fine bark works well. Repot every 1–2 years as the plant matures, ideally in spring.
🐾 Toxicity & Safety
Completely non-toxic and safe for pets—an excellent choice for animal-friendly households.
🌱 Growth & Propagation
This small variety stays compact, reaching up to 30–35 cm at full maturity. Best propagated through gentle root division during spring repotting.
📆 Seasonal & Special Care
Feed monthly in spring and summer with a diluted, balanced fertilizer. In winter, reduce watering and protect from dry heating air by boosting humidity.
🐛 Common Issues
- Crispy leaf edges → caused by low humidity or mineral-rich tap water
- Color fading → too much direct sunlight
- Drooping → underwatering or cold drafts
